NATIONALISM
According to Questia.com, an online resource dictionary, Nationalism is a political or social philosophy in which the welfare of the nation-state as an entity is considered paramount. Nationalism is basically a collective state of mind or consciousness in which people believe their primary duty and loyalty is to the nation-state. Often nationalism implies national superiority and glorifies various national virtues. Thus love of nation may be overemphasized; concern with national self-interest to the exclusion of the rights of other.
IMPORTANT EVENT IN THE 19TH CENTURY THAT LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONALISM
Our country, Philippines is known not just a country that's rich in culture, but famous because of the history as well. Part of it are the happenings around 19th century which became significant to the establishment of nationalism in our country. One important event happened is the invasion and the heartless colonization of Spaniards. That's why our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal intelligently sought for freedom and wrote "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo". Those novels had greatly inspired Andres Bonifacio's group "Katipunan" which led to its brave revolution in 1896. That was the time, I think, when Filipinos gained sense of nationalism.
HEROISM
Heroism, in my own insight, is the deeper and more significant act of nationalism. It is similar to patriotism, yet heroism has braver acts, including the risk of your own life. The leading criteria of being a hero are of course, being brave (yet have a kind heart). A hero won’t be able to be victorious if he is not brave enough to face the tough challenges, especially if they are in battles. Another is the love of country; you should work and fight for your country’s freedom. It is stated at the criteria in recognizing national heroes.
CRITERIA IN RECOGNIZING NATIONAL HEROES:
They must aspire and work for the nation's freedom
“Like Andres Bonifacio, despite the lack of weapons, He still formed a revolutionary army to fight the Spaniards.”
They must contribute to a life of freedom and order of a nation through ways such as formulating laws and enacting them.
“Even though Rizal was not able to create a law, He defended the Filipinos from the Spaniards unjust laws, contributing to the Filipino’s goal to fight for freedom. ”
Heroes should contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation
“Rizal made a big contribution to the quality of life of Filipinos. His death triggered the revolution that resulted to our country’s independence. If not for him, we might still be under Spanish oppression.”
They should also be part of the people's expression and must think of the future generations.
“Through Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, his nationalistic ideas were passed to the future generations of Filipinos which greatly affected their sense of nationalism resulting to a stronger and more persevering nation.”
HOW RIZAL DEVELOPED HIS NATIONALIST ASPIRATION
"Just as what I’ve written in the previous number, Rizal had made the two Novels "El Filibusterismo" and "Noli Me Tangere" which contain philosophies about his fellow Filipinos.
Based on the content of his novels, his novels disapprove the way Spaniards implement their laws and how they practice their leadership. His novels are also centred upon him, defending Filipinos from Spanish oppression and boasting the positive features, traits, and characteristics of Filipinos which the Spaniards did not see (Because they only see negative). Thus, resulting for his novels to become an inspiration to many Filipinos which led to the establishment of Katipunan (led by Andres Bonifacio), inspiring them to fight for their freedom.
HEROISM IS IN EVERY BLOOD OF FILIPINOS
I believe that in our present time, a hero is not defined by someone who holds a weapon and fights until death. Violence and bloodshed is not the answer for every conflict that we will encounter.
Heroism can be practiced by simply obeying law and by helping others without asking anything in return.
Today, our fight is not with our enemies but with ourselves. Because of our greediness and selfishness, many people suffer. We are envious if other people are prosperous. We become greedy if there is an opportunity. We don’t care about other people sufferings as long as we benefit. We are not contented on what we have. If only we Filipinos will have unity and will put aside our personal interest and think of the majority, it can be the greatest contribution that we can offer to our country’s goal for better life and brighter future for the next generation of Filipinos.
